Elliot Page narrates this hilarious and heartwarming romp through the animal world, following brave scientists fighting relentless censorship to reveal the truth about our nature.
Director Drew Denny was raised in Texas where she was taught that females are “naturally inferior” to males and that queerness is simply “unnatural,” which led to heartbreak and bullying as a queer teen girl.
Second Nature is the film she needed in high school - proving that queerness abounds in the natural world, females often lead the pack, and Mother Nature is fabulously diverse. Turns out we ALL belong - just as we are!
Screening is followed by a virtual Q&A with
Elliot Page
Narrator, Executive Producer
Dr. Joan Roughgarden
Drew Denny
Director
Evolutionary Biologist
All proceeds support a national tour of Second Nature as a mental health resource for queer youth, especially in states where LGBTQ+ inclusive curricula are banned.
About the Film
Did you know that clownfish change sex from male to female? (So if Nemo’s mom had died in real life, his dad would have become his mom!) Did you know that albatross, penguins and swans parent in same sex pairs? Or that bonobos, who are just as closely related to us as chimps, are matriarchal and have same-sex sex every day?!
Debunking myths that females are “inferior” and being queer is “unnatural,” Second Nature follows trailblazing trans Evolutionary Biologist Dr. Joan Roughgarden as she meets other groundbreaking scientists exploring the 1500+ animal species who engage in same-sex sexual behavior and parenting, change sex, form matriarchies, and more…
Second Nature - everything you didn’t learn in high school biology class.

The reality facing our schools.
Scientists, writers, and queer communities are under attack. GSAs are banned in Texas. LGBTQ+ inclusive curricula is banned in nine states. Educators are losing their jobs for trying to save students’ lives.
Let’s rally to show queer youth that they are loved, and that they belong on Earth - exactly as they are.
